About this Kominka
Located in Aratani, Yamanaka Onsen—about an hour’s drive from Kanazawa—this traditional Japanese house was built in Taisho 10.
The traditional hearth and chimney are still intact, and since the Ugibashi River flows right behind the house, you can catch fish and enjoy them over the hearth.
Another attraction is the proximity to three hot spring resorts—Yamanaka, Yamashiro, and Katayamazu—each with its own unique spring water.
The ocean is also nearby; about a 30-minute drive away is the charming Hashidate Port, a former port of call for Kitamae ships, where you can savor fresh seasonal seafood.
Since some parts of the house require repairs, I’ve included photos below.
This area is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, so certain procedures are required when performing exterior renovations.
A subsidy program is also available. For details, please see here.

I purchased this property five years ago, drawn by the sense of the previous owner’s life—someone born here who lived among the mountains for many years—but unfortunately, due to circumstances, I’ve had to let it go. Though my photos are amateurish, I hope they convey at least a little of this house’s history and the charm of this land.
